A cog in the machine

کسی که دارای مقام و موقعیت کوچک و کم ارزشی در سازمانی بزرگ است

Example:

I don’t wanna be a cog in the machine anymore, I quit. 

Top dog

شخص پرنفوذ و پر قدرت، مهره ی اصلی

Example:

You’ll only get a truthful answer if you talk to the top dog of this organization. 

To play second fiddle

شخصی که دارای وظایف فرعی و ثانویه است

Example:

I’m not prepared to play second fiddle to Christina any more – I’m looking for another job!

To throw one’s weight around

از قدرت و نفوذ خود سو استفاده کردن

Example:

I am tired of my boss throwing his weight around in the office. I’m quitting.

To call the tune

آقا بالا سر بودن، کنترل همه چیز را در دست داشتن

Example:

Who would be calling the tune in the parliament?

Be your own boss

برای خود کار کردن و رئیس خود بودن

Example:

Since I’m my own boss, my hours are flexible. 

Under somebody’s thumb

تحت کنترل کسی بودن

Example:

He’s been under his mother’s thumb for years.

Twist someone round one’s little finger

کنترل و تسلط داشتن روی کسی، توانایی متقاعد کردن فردی به انجام کاری

Example:

He’d do anything for you. You’ve got him twisted around your little finger.

Someone’s marriage is on the rocks

زندگی کسی از هم پاشیدن، ازدواجی که رو به پایان است

Example:

His marriage is on the rocks.

Having it out with someone

با کسی جروبحث کردن برای رسیدن به نتیجه ای

Example:

Tom and his boyfriend are always having it out.

Toe the line

فرمان برداری کردن، سر به راه بودن، اطاعت از قوانین 

Example:

If you want to get ahead, you’d better learn to toe the line.

To lay down the law

آمرانه تعیین تکلیف کردن، دستور قاطع دادن

Example:

She can’t just come into this office and start laying down the law.

Even the worm will turn

حتی بی آزارترین آدم هم اگر بیش از اندازه تحت فشار باشد طغیان می کند.

Example:

If you’re too hard on your employees, even the worm will turn. 

To take a back seat

اداره ی امور را به کسی دیگر دادن، در درجه دوم قرار گرفتن

Example:

I took a back seat during the presentation because I knew you could handle it. 

The last straw

کارد به استخوان رسیدن، کاسه ی صبر کسی لبریز شدن

Example:

Losing my job was bad enough, but being evicted was the final straw.

To put one’s foot down

روی تصمیم خود پابرجا بودن، قاطع بودن

Example:

When she started borrowing my clothes without asking, I had to put my foot down.
